Dick Hawes: End Of An Era
(Posted on behalf and at the request of Pam Hawes)

I’m sad to say that one of the sport’s longest serving competitors and enthusiast has had to retire from racing and withdraw all his involvement with immediate effect owing to his very serious illness. Dick has been admitted to residential care and is extremely unlikely to ever be well enough to return home.

His racing career started in the very early 1960’s, he is one of the very few competitors to have raced solo, driven sidecar and passengered at the Isle Of Man TT Races. His first TT was in 1966, and he rarely missed competing at the Island until his last TT in 2008. In 1974, he finished in third place in the 500cc Sidecar TT which was then the British Grand Prix. Almost two decades later he finished third overall (1993) taking a pair of fourth place finishes. These are just two highlights of a long and successful TT campaign where he won numerous replicas and took top ten finishes.

In his early career, Dick competed at many European Grand Prix events, taking a number of podium places. Later, he continued to support overseas events, promoting and encouraging fellow British competitors to travel abroad. He was twice Belgian Classic Sidecar Champion, and a regular at the Pre-TT Classic at Billown where he had much success. One of his final achievements was to mastermind and create the “Camathias Cup” classic sidecar series, which is arguably the most successful classic sidecar series in Europe at this time.

There are a large number of current and past competitors who have benefitted greatly from Dick’s experience and generosity, and I am sure they will join me in expressing sorrow at this news. Our thoughts are with Pam, and of course Dick at this sad time.

Please contact myself rather than the family at this time if you need to get in touch.
